The holiday period is approaching for many, and it is getting easier to travel around Europe again. Luxembourg was one of the few EU countries that never closed its borders to neighbouring countries during the peak of the coronavirus pandemic. The airport opened again at the end of May, and the number of flights that have resumed to various European destinations is increasing every week.
So why not visit the Grand Duchy this summer, and bring your bike along? Cycling is a perfect way of discovering the country, from the Ardennes hills in the north to the Red Rock region in the south. Explore the unique rock formations in “Little Switzerland”, follow the wine route along the Moselle Valley or enjoy the sights of the Seven Castles Valley in central Luxembourg. Cycle paths
Luxembourg has 23 official cycle paths totalling almost 700 km that cover the country from north to south. In case you prefer mountain biking, there is another 700 km of signposted mountain bike tracks.
In order to further expand this offer, the government is looking to reserve 16 sections of state roads for cyclists, local residents and buses during the month of August. At the time of writing, the exclusive use of 10 of the suggested routes has already been approved.
3,500 km of hiking paths
If you prefer bringing your hiking boots rather than your bike for your holidays, Luxembourg also offers 3,500 km of signposted hiking paths all over the country.
Ride or walk without your baggage
A brand new service aimed at facilitating the holidays of cyclists and hikers was launched on 23 June 2020: MoveWeCarry. This service delivers the baggage of travellers moving around by foot or bike from one accommodation – hotels, camping sites, youth hostels or holiday cottages – to another, leaving them free to circulate without cumbersome luggage. The service is free of charge until the end of the year.
This initiative is part of the relaunch plan “Restart Tourism”. “We constantly want to improve our tourist offer and make the stay in the Grand Duchy as pleasant as possible thanks to innovative projects,” said Minister of Tourism Lex Delles. “Cycling and hiking are certainly the best means of discovering the five regions of Luxembourg. The MoveWeCarry.lu service will allow residents and tourists to cross the country easily and will also help promote tourism in rural areas.”
