2022 WJP Rule of Law Index rankingPublished by the World Justice Project (WJP), the WJP Rule of Law Index is the world’s leading source for original, independent data covering 140 countries and jurisdictions. The WJP defines the rule of law as “a durable system of laws, institutions, norms, and community commitment that delivers: accountability, just laws, open government, and accessible and impartial justice”. The index is based on eight factors: Constraints on Government Powers, Absence of Corruption, Open Government, Fundamental Rights, Order and Security, Regulatory Enforcement, Civil Justice, and Criminal Justice.

Luxembourg has a high level of rule of law

Luxembourg is in 8th place in the 2022 edition of the index, which is topped by Denmark, Norway and Finland.

Luxembourg ranks particularly high for the Order and Security factor, for which the country is second in the world with a complete absence of civil conflict and low levels of crime and violent redress. It ranks 6th in the world for Fundamental Rights, with a particularly high score for the right to life and security. The country also ranks 6th worldwide for its Regulatory Enforcement.

Luxembourg gets its lowest ranks in the categories Constraints on Government Powers and Criminal Justice, but being in 13th place in both these fields, it is still clearly among the world’s top performers.
