Home News Luxembourg among the world’s most democratic nations Luxembourg among the world’s most democratic nationsDemocracy is weakening worldwide, according to the EIU’s 2024 Democracy Index. Of the 167 countries assessed, only 37 saw improvements, while 83 experienced a decline compared to the year before. Just 25 nations qualify as “full democracies”.

In this challenging global context, Luxembourg has climbed one spot from 2023, achieving an overall score of 8.88/10. It is one of only five Western European nations – the world’s highest-scoring region – to record an improvement, alongside Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, and the UK. Notably, Luxembourg received a perfect score for electoral process and pluralism and an outstanding 9.71/10 for civil liberties.

At the top of the global ranking, Norway leads with a 9.81/10, followed by New Zealand, Sweden, Iceland, and Switzerland.
