The 2020 edition of the Henley Passport Index Global Ranking places Luxembourg in 4th place in terms of passport holders’ freedom to travel around the world without having to apply for a visa. Luxembourg nationals can access 188 different countries without obtaining a visa before travelling.

Japan is in first place with 191 countries, followed by Singapore with 190 and Germany and South Korea with 189 each. Luxembourg shares 4th place with Finland, Italy and Spain.

Impact of the coronavirus pandemic

The Henley Passport Index claims to be the most rigorous and sophisticated measure of global access. Countries for which a passport holder can travel without any visa or obtain a visa on arrival, a visitor’s permit or an electronic travel authority when entering the destination are considered visa free.

The 2020 ranking does not take temporary travel bans due to the coronavirus pandemic into account. However, Henley notices that holders of some traditionally prestigious passports, such as those of the United States and Brazil, are facing considerable travel restraints for as long as the temporary bans are in place.
