The investment was announced on 10 May 2021 by Minister of the Economy Franz Fayot and Guus Boekhoudt, executive vice president of Guardian Glass and general director of Guardian Europe. The existing furnace on Guardian’s production site in Bascharage is reaching end of life and will be replaced, at the end of 2022, by a new facility at the cutting edge of technological and environmental development which will be used to produce high added value glass.

Improved environmental performance

The new furnace, which is expected to be operational in 2023, is designed to improve energy efficiency as well as the overall environmental performance of float glass production while significantly reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions. This modernisation programme will benefit from investment aid for environmental protection from the Ministry of the Economy.

Guardian’s investment in a state-of-the-art production facility is part of our economic policy to support the continued development of a high value added industry.

“Guardian’s investment in a state-of-the-art production facility is part of our economic policy to support the continued development of a high value added industry, less energy-intensive and more respectful of the environment,” commented Minister Fayot.

Luxembourg centre of excellence

In 2020, Guardian merged its two Luxembourg production sites. As part of this new investment programme, the company will consolidate all its production activities in Bascharage, where Guardian Europe’s headquarters have been located since 2016. The intention is to make the site a centre of excellence for glass.

“Thanks to this new investment in Bascharage, glass production in Luxembourg will continue for the next 15 to 20 years,” said Mr Boekhoudt. “I would like to thank the Luxembourg government, and in particular the Ministry of the Economy, for all the support provided for the development of Guardian in Luxembourg.”
