With its SpaceResources.lu initiative and legal framework regarding the ownership and right to use resources harvested in space, Luxembourg is a pioneer in the field of space resources exploration and use. Belgium has also a long tradition of legal, technical and economic expertise in the space field. In the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS), Belgium and Luxembourg work together with other countries to develop an international framework for the exploitation of space resources. The declaration signed confirms the willingness of the two countries to work together to develop a legal framework.

7th space resources partnership

Étienne Schneider, Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Economy signed the declaration together with the Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs and of Defense, Didier Reynders. Minister Schneider pointed out that this is the seventh country with which Luxembourg has signed a collaboration agreement related to space resources and stated: “The Grand Duchy is firmly determined to support the competitiveness of the commercial space industry in Europe. Together with our partners, we develop related knowledge and skills further while encouraging investment, notably in the private sector, in order to develop and implement technological, operational and financial solutions.”
